Recently my parents celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Friends and family from near and wide showered them with cards and good wishes. It was a joy to see them light up as they shared them with me. I commented how they are a beacon to the rest of us for what true love looks, feels, and sounds like. Every day.
I’ve been pondering what that means, to be a beacon.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.
This week's word: Beacon
Beacon. What a bright and hopeful word.
As a noun that means "a light, signal fire, sometimes on a hill or pole.” Or “a radio signal for guidance or warning or aircraft, as at night or in fog.” Or, “a lighthouse.” Or, “a person or thing that offers encouragement or guidance, etc.”
As a verb, beacon means “to light up darkness, to provide or mark with beacons, and to shine or serve as a beacon.”
It also means, "flare, lantern, alert, balefire, beam, guidepost, heliograph, lodestar, sign.”
I was meditating early one morning, gazing at the blinding sunrise when the phrase “follow the sun” came to mind and got me thinking about how the sun is not only a powerful source that fuels our energies, but it’s also a beacon lighting the day, and providing a sense of direction.
Since ancient times, navigators and travelers used the North Star as a beacon for direction. The North Star has become a metaphor for following your inspirations and purpose. It’s a symbol of hope, guiding us toward our true north.
Your true north is an internal beacon.
"The light that guides you shines from within.”— Rumi
It’s a good reminder that we are beacons for our human potential, for our own possibilities made possible.
Reflections are also a beacon shining the light on the past, or on a thought worth exploring.
"We radiate our love as a beacon of light encouraging those around us.”— Harold W. Becker
I think of a beacon as being a person who shines a light on the path forward. Perhaps someone who is a shining example of something you desire in your life.
The beacon provides the light, the energy that can spark your engine to manifest it in your life.
"Use your knowledge, and your heart, to stand up for those who can't stand, speak for those who can't speak, be a beacon of light for those whose lives have become dark."— Julie Andrews
Beacons can illuminate the murky waters to help people navigate their way through.
Beacons of hope, of peace, of friendship, of benevolence, of solidarity, of kindness, of love, of spirit and Grace.
The invitation and opportunity are always there to be that kind of beacon.
Take a few moments this week to ponder beacons in your life.
