Hey there!
I’m on a much-needed break, spending some delicious time with family in Port Aransas at the beach. It’s hard to shut down sometimes, to give yourself permission to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate. Ah, all those resonating “re” words. It reminded me of this one from a bit ago on Thought Changer.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.
A Quick Word - Words have power. Use them well.
This week's word: Respite
Another good Re word. Yes, please. I’m working on it…
Respite. What a forgiving word.
It's a noun that means "a period of temporary delay." Or "an interval of rest of relief."
It also means, "break, breathing space, intermission, interlude, recess, lull, pause, time out, hiatus, halt, stop, stoppage, cessation, discontinuation, standstill; relaxation, repose; informal breather, letup."
Respite is derived from the Latin term respectus, a verb meaning "to turn around to look at" or "to regard." By the 14th century, respite informed the sense we use most often today, "a welcome break."
I think of a respite as taking a long breath, as in a full energetic inhale and exhale. For me, it's diving into creativity.
"Art is a spiritual, immaterial respite from the hardships of life.— Fernando Botero"
And,
"Music furnishes a delightful recreation for the hours of respite from the cares of the day, and lasts us through life.."—Thomas Jefferson
Being in Nature also does wonders during a respite. It's often in those times that new thoughts and ideas unexpectedly spark.
“Play matters because it gives us a brief respite from the tyranny of apparent purpose.”— Jill Vialet
What does your respite look like?
It offers an opportunity for consideration of things that truly matter.
Take a few moments this week to lean into some respite.
Journal Prompt
Prompt: Reflect on a time when you were calm and serene and mind, body, and spirit. Paint the scene. What led to it? How did you feel?
For the Love of Words
Words have power and how we use them creates meaning, good and bad, high and low. We give words voice whether we intend to or not.
What are the voices in your head telling you? Constantly.
Did you know those words also live in your body? When they’re negative disempowering words, they can fester, hold you back, and even make you sick.
Please join the wonderful Maria Mahboubi (somatic healer and body shaman) and me (creative coach and word shaman) for a two-session interactive work(play)shop to discover the profound relationship between language and the body, uncovering how the words we choose (and hear) shape our physical and emotional well-being.
Your body holds onto your stories, your words, and more importantly, the feelings and fears attached to those words.
In this intimate work-and-play shop, with interactive lessons for your mind, body, and soul, you'll learn how to disconnect from the stories you've told yourself or heard about yourself and reconnect and care for the incredible person you are inside.
This.
Is.
Powerful.

A Quick Share
Here are a few things I thought worth sharing this week:
A quote I’m pondering: “The truth isn’t always beauty, but the hunger for it is.” ― Nadine Gordimer.
One of my not-guilty pleasures is talent shows. I don’t watch the full episodes but love viewing the recaps and best-of’s on YouTube. I have watched this chill-inducing one probably ten times (and cried every time). Amazing Golden Buzzer singer on Britain’s Got Talent. Check it out!
Some asked me to share this again. I created a WEEK OF THINGS-ONE THING To-Do List that allows you to grab everything you need/want to do during the week, while also focusing on the ONE THING that must get done each day. I’m finding it so helpful.
Print out a bunch. Hope you find it useful. Let me know what you think!
And, this from
’s book “Keep Going.” I did my open sesame exercise and when I cracked open the book, my eyes landed on: “Sleep tidies the brain.” I plan on lots of brain-tidying while on my respite!
A creative journey starts with one step.
