A Quick Sunday Read and a bit about Buoyancy
A newsletter to tickle your thoughts and your words
Happy Oscar Day!
Or as dear friends and I call it, our Superbowl Sunday! The pregame show, “Countdown to Oscars,” plays in the background, as I prep to celebrate tonight, our fellow artists and the year’s best of the best.
We make our picks and watch together, texting our commentary along the way. We used to have big Oscar parties when we were all living in LA. Now, we’re spread out: NYC, Nashville and Austin. Thus, the text-watch party.
If you’re an Oscar-ite, what are you picks for tonight? Let me know in the comments!
For fun, here are my picks for who I think should win the main categories (not necessarily who I think will win):
Best Picture: “The Holdovers”
Best Actor/Actress: Colman Domingo, “Rustin” / Lily Gladstone, “"Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Best Supporting Actor/Actress: Robert De Niro, "Killers of the Flower Moon" / Da'Vine Joy Randolph, "The Holdovers"
Best Director: Christopher Nolan, "Oppenheimer"
Best Original Screenplay: David Hemingson, “The Holdovers"
Best Adapted Screenplay: Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, “Barbie”
As always, would love to hear your thoughts.
A Quick Word - Words have power. Use them well.
This week's word: Buoyancy
This last week was the celebrated finish to Cole Brauer's sail as the first American woman to race solo non-stop around the world, in a 40-foot sailboat in the Global Solo Challenge. My friends and I eagerly watched on Instagram as she posted live during her 130-day journey.
My dear friend Ferrell Marshall put it poignantly in a Facebook post about Cole Brauer’s gargantuan accomplishment: “She faced down monstrous waves that aimed to crush her spirit (but clearly didn’t know who they were dealing with!), outwitted the trickiest of winds, overcame equipment failures, nursed bruised ribs, and self-administered an IV to recover from food poisoning. Yet, she still found time to celebrate the beauty of sunrises, marvel at the mystery of the darkest nights, and embrace the whimsy of turning her boat into a makeshift laundry line, with her underwear proudly waving like victory flags.
In this grueling global race, Cole's indomitable spirit shone brightly.”
Her drive was unstoppable and her spirit was buoyant. That’s the word that kept coming to my mind to capture her essence.
Buoyancy. What an uplifting word.
I think of buoyancy as an ever-present, boundless surge of hopeful air. A puff or a gust, whatever is needed to serve in the moment.
In Cole’s case, that hopeful gust of wind served her spirit as well as her sails.
"Doubt will take a vessel down, but faith has buoyancy."—Pepper Blair
Buoyancy is a noun that means "the power to float or rise in a fluid; relative lightness." Or "lightness or resilience of spirit; cheerfulness."
Resilience. Elasticity. Bounce. Blithesome. Eupeptic. Winsome. Bright.
Sometimes buoyancy is a life-saver, as the reliable buoy in the deep waters, floating within reach.
Buoyancy always rises. It's a natural force in physics.
There's buoyancy all around us. In nature. The bounce in someone's step. The lilt in a voice. The small act of kindness. The words of encouragement. The promise of an invitation.
"A beautiful day with the buoyancy of a bird."—Truman Capote
Love, compassion, understanding. All breathe air into the buoyant force of nature, hopeful air for yourself and others.
“My youthful heart still holds the buoyancy of promise. Even though it is scarred by the ravages of time, there is still hope and possibilities to explore.”—Andrew Pacholyk
Buoyancy is the human spirit. It’s comforting to know this innateness lives in all of us.
"The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience."—Emily Dickinson
Take a moment this week and settle into your buoyancy. Something to think about.
