A Quick Sunday Read and a bit about Foundation
A newsletter to tickle your thoughts and your words
Hello, Lovely,
Happy Father’s Day to those who celebrate! It’s an especially joyous one today for us as we celebrate two new fathers in our family. My nephew Kirk, Dad to Hudson; and my nephew-in-law David, Lincoln’s Dad. It’s so wonderful to watch them flourish!
Debbie and I are blessed to have a father who has led his life by example for us, with much emphasis on discovering, understanding, and living our values. Dad still instills in us a foundation built on these values. And, what a wonderful example he sets for the new fathers in our family.
If you are one of the many who find today difficult—for a myriad of reasons that only you know—I see you, I feel you and I wish you love.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.
A Quick Word - Words have power. Use them well.
This week's word: Foundation
As Father's Day approached, I got to thinking about the profound things I've received and still receive from my Dad. Certainly, it is the gift of a seeking and curious mind. I think much of my desire to question things and then ruminate on the question, meditating, gathering wisdom, and making decisions, comes from my Dad.
But, digging deeper, what I came to, as the basis for all that he has provided to my life, is a strong sense of foundation.
Foundation. What a grounding word.
Foundation is a noun meaning, "an underlying base or support." And, "a basis (such as a tenet, principle, or axiom) upon which something stands or is supported."
Base. Bedrock. Bottom. Cornerstone. Footing. Ground. Keystone. Root. Backbone. Center. Core. Eye. Focus. Heart. Hub. Kernel. Nucleus. Seat. Essence. Quintessence. Soul. Touchstone.
What a fabulous gathering of words that define fatherhood, to my way of thinking, as a grateful and fortunate daughter. Foundation is the very essence of a strong, kind, and loving father.
What that then instills is a solid footing for everything in life. It becomes part of who you are. When something happens that rocks my foundation such as events that shift my footing for a while, making me feel unsteady, I know I can draw upon what's been ingrained in my fatherly foundation. And, then I can regain my footing.
"The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty." – Zig Ziglar
Foundation is the safe place to land.
Foundation is the platform from which to launch.
“Wonder is the foundation of all philosophy, inquiry the progress, ignorance the end.” – Michel de Montaigne
Foundation is balance.
"It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; its the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time." – David Allan Coe
Foundation is the place to rebuild.
"Integrity is the foundation upon which all other values are built." – Brian Tracy
Values are something we talked about a lot as my sister and I were growing up. My parents lived theirs and encouraged us to do the same. "It's important to have good and strong values," my Dad would say. "What do you value?"
I'm still asking and answering that question, every day, Dad. So thank you for my firm foundation and for inspiring the new fathers in our family to do the same.
Take some time this week and examine your priorities—something to think about.
